Barns Heritage
The Barns, built in the 1870’s, have a long history of being working agricultural barns and we’re really proud of how beautiful and glorious they still are. We are a working farm on the edge of Lyonshall Village and have a vast area for guests to explore and enjoy – The Barns were fundamental to the farm structure years ago but became impractical for modern day use and machinery. They are stunning examples of Victorian architecture and our local heritage, please see the gallery below showing their old use.
Home & Heritage
Owned by The Hern Family, The Barns were opened in October 2014 after a long four year period of devoted renovation in a quest to retain their incredibly handsome structure but create a luxury home from home holiday experience. Kinsey (pictured) took over running the farm in 2006 when he was 25 and immediately set about gaining permission to convert the beautifully preserved barns and finding a new use for them as the farm began to change and diversify. Traditionally a mixed farm, Upper House Farm still retains its historical roots. Bought by William Jones (known locally as ‘Billy-no-time) in 1924 for one of his 9 children, The Barns were used for agricultural purposes – cattle, chickens and horses were housed for many years, and many architectural details within the main structure of the buildings still remain from their original purpose. Kinsey’s parents, live in the farmhouse opposite The Barns and Kinsey and his wife and 2 young children, Ethel and Walter, live on the farm and are often around – generally negotiating with a toddler of some sort! You may also see the 2 black dogs Otto and Wally around, and Kinsey’s parents Tony and Tricia as they come and go as well of course one of our lovely team members.
Renovation and History
The barns were built in approximately 1870 by talented stonemasons and architects – perhaps one of the most striking things about The Barns is their sheer size and the quantity of beautiful stone that was required. The process of gaining planning permission on The Barns was rather lengthy; but Kinsey has expertly and thoughtfully designed each unit with family living and luxury in mind. Every original opening has been preserved, and further openings have been added, according to planning permission, with such sympathy that we challenge you to notice them! Anything that was removed from the buildings (such as the hay racks and doors) were reinterpreted and reworked into things such as furniture or artwork.
The Barns in their modern converted layout were beautifully designed and project managed by Kinsey himself and took a painstaking 3.5 years to complete. He, through experience, had noticed that most modern or converted holidays lets in the UK were designed for maximum sleeping capacity at the expense of living space which is so vital when relaxing on holiday so he set about designing the spaces to enable larger groups to also have copious amounts of living and ‘break-out’ spaces and to ensure each bedroom has its own private bathroom.
For some accuracy the names of The Barns correspond to their original use. Natural light is something of a luxury in old barns as they were not designed with humans in mind so again Kinsey carefully considered this in the design with as much glazing as allowed to enjoy the outdoors from the indoors. Kinsey’s wife Camilla was in charge of the interiors so together they exposed as many stone and brick walls as possible, used natural and recycled textures, raw and simple fabrics (from Tinsmiths in Ledbury) together with an earthy colour palette and an understanding of the buildings they once were. They made sure that most materials were sourced from local companies and tried to reduce environmental impact wherever possible. The spaces inside are very generous, well laid out and gently lit – having a delicate hand to create usable spaces that are practical yet pretty was key.
What Next...
Just to make your stay at The Barns even more amazing - we have a few projects up our sleeves for the future. Excitingly, four years ago we purchased the local pub in the village, The George. It has been a long and frustrating project so far to get the correct permissions in place to renovate and improve the site and provide many more amenities for locals in the village and surrounding areas plus our lovely guests from all over the country and overseas.
